Last Christmas & Dil Mera Churaya Kyun

Standard

We always noticed how similar the tunes of Last Christmas & Dil Mera Churaya Kyun from the movie Akhele Hum Akhele Tum were. My sister Sneha & I decided to put the songs together in a little Bollywood Christmas Cover :)

Enjoy the lyrics video!

Feliz Navidad & Prospero Nuevo Ano!

Standard

My sister and I had an AMAZING time putting this video together! From dancing in the snow, to laughing over several iterations of bad harmony, to eating breaks, it was full of all the amazing things that make the Holidays so special! Laughter, music, food and family.

I have been learning Spanish for nearly 2 years now, so we picked this song because I thought it would be fun to sing in Spanish. I apologize in advance for any accent issues :)

Also, I would just like to say – Isn’t my sister FANTASTIC? I know sometime it’s hard to tell who’s singing what, because we keep switching between highs and lows, but it’s her voice that kicks off the song on the main tune of Feliz Navidad.

We wish You and your family a VERY Merry Christmas, a fantastic Holiday Season, and a Wonderful 2014!

En Veetu Thottatil

The final of three recordings I made with my friend Abhinav :)

Music by A. R. Rahman.
Original Vocalists : S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, Sujatha

Meaning

(I found this translation on a random forum)

Ask the flowers at my home garden
Ask all the windows at my home
Ask my coconut grove
They will say your name

Ask the flowers at my home garden
Ask all the windows at my home
Ask my coconut grove
They will speak my heart

A lady singer should not be silent
If all the bees buzz then the garden can’t withstand
If all the buds make sound, then the bees can’t hear
After aadi (season) the river won’t wait
After aadi, the alipoo (flower) does not close
Wishes vibrating

Without the permission of ‘telling’, I came to tell
There’s no distance between ‘tell’ and ‘meaning
No love reaches the heaven without telling
Even if counting ends, kisses do not,

Kabira (Encore Version)

Standard

This is another song that Abhi & I recorded together :) I am still waiting for a Karaoke version of the original Kabira! It’s one of my favorite 2013 songs

Movie: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Music: Pritam
Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya
Singers: Rekha Bharadwaj, Tochi Raina

Meaning

F: My darling daughter is leaving for her in-law’s home
She gave tears in our eyes, as a blessing
She took away her jaggery and covering of raw grains
M: Oh great one, heed to this
Oh deep thinker, don’t leave in this way
Come, your shadows are calling you
The same bed broke, the cold wind grazes on your path
The cream of milk is the same, the earten pot grazes on your path
F: Oh girl, your husband is a foreigner
Your bond is blessed by the heavens
Look it’s happiness all around

small things, just like that, while passing by,
memories go, stroking me,
in the nights, below the pillow, old smiles,
make me sleep..
it’s not possible to meet, but tell me this much
why have we met then..
I can’t call you, can’t forget you,
why is it so?
everything is the same, but something is missing..
the sound of your footsteps isn’t there..

I didn’t know, you didn’t know,
whatever happened without knowing..
something happened, that didn’t happen to me,
why did it happen to you then..
it’s not your mistake, it’s not my mistake,
why are there complaints still..
I can’t call you, can’t forget you,
why is it so?
everything is the same, but something is missing..
the sound of your footsteps isn’t there..

why, why aren’t they there

Rupaiya- Satyamev Jayate

Standard

This amazing song composed by Swanand Kirkire followed the Satyamev Jayate episode on Dowry. Stephen Murray composed the piano track for this unplugged version.

In a nutshell, it means “I’m not a burden on anyones head, I’m a strong woman. I can do it on my own, and I don’t need a marriage at all. This is the time to say no, because no amount of money could ever sell me.”  It’s scary to think that these things happen in today’s day and age, and I hope every woman going through something like this can find the strength within themselves.

I recorded this track a couple of weeks ago using my Yeti Blue Microphone.

Ninnukori- Agni Nachathiram

Standard

One of our close family friends Kumar uncle is a great pianist, so his 60th birthday party would not have been complete without a family jam session! Here is Kumar uncles rendition of “Ninnukori Varnam”, with me doing the vocals.

Yeh Nigahein – Cover with Akshay Hari

Standard

My family friend Akshay Hari in Pittsburgh is a star Bollywood performer, and even had a stint with Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in Bombay!

After an amazing karaoke night with the families, we decided to record a song together. Of course Bollywood is totally out of my comfort zone, but it was fun to collaboarate with a professional :D

Check out Akshay’s YouTube link, and our first song “Yeh Nigahein” from the movie Khoya Khoya Chand!

Yeh Nigahein Lyrics

Yeh Nigahein Nigahein Nigahein Jhuki Jhuki
Appni Aahein Labon Ki Hado Per Ruki Ruki
Haaye
Yeh Nigahein Nigahein Nigahein Jhuki Jhuki
Appni Aahein Labon Ki Hado Per Ruki Ruki

Haaye
Mehfil Mehfil Kyun Deewana
Yeh Parwana Ghomta Hai
Jal Jayega Janta Hai
To Kyun Shama Ko Chumta Hai

Yeh Nigahein Nigahein Nigahein Jhuki Jhuki
Khobsurat Si Surat Hai Inmein Basi Basi

Ki Sharbati In Aankhon Mein Basa Hai Kyun Bolo
Ki Bola Na Palak Utha Ki Raj Dil To Kholo
JO Tum Nahi To Gum Nahi
Shamaye Bhi To Kam Nahi
Ka Honge Ki Hum Nahi
Yeh Nigahein Nigahein Jhuki Jhuki
Appni Aahein Labon Ki Hado Per Ruki Ruki

Mehfil Mehfil Kyun Deewana
Yeh Parwana Ghomta Hai
Jal Jayega Janta Hai
Per Shama Ko Chumta Hai

Nazar Mile To Ek Khahar Sa Ban Ke Tut Legi
Yeh Khwahise Haya Ki Sarhado Ko Tog Dengi
Nazar Mile To Ek Khahar Sa Ban Ke Tut Legi
Yeh Khwahise Haya Ki Sarhado Ko Tog Dengi
Haan
Jao Na Ajee Jao Bhi
Jao Na Ajee Jao Bhi
Zindagi Mein Waise Bhi Gum Koi Kam To Nahi

Yeh Nigahein Nigahein Nigahein Jhuki Jhuki
Khobsurat Si Surat Hai Inmein Basi Basi

Mehfil Mehfil Kyun Deewana
Yeh Parwana Ghomta Hai
Jal Jayega Janta Hai
Per Shama Ko Chumta Hai

Omana Thinkal

Standard

This beautiful Malayalam lullaby was composed by Sikkil Gurucharan & Anil Srinivasan. Stephen Murray recorded the piano for this over two years ago. After an embarrassingly long hiatus, I finally got the help of my good friend Jerin to fix up my Malayalam, and I recorded it last week. I can’t speak for my singing, but Steve’s work on the piano was beyond amazing.

This song describes a child- Is it a crescent’s moon, or the flower of a lotus? The honey in a flower, or the lustre of the full moon?

It’s a really really beautiful song, so I hope I was able to give it justice.

Omana Thinkal Lyrics

Omanathingal KidAvo,
Nalla KomaLa ThAmara Poovo,

Maa

Standard

As mentioned in this post about our Annual Charity Talent night, I not only performed one song along with Stephen and Nick, but I performed two! Our second song called “Maa” from the Hindi Movie Taare Zameen Par. This song was originally composed by Shankar-Ehsan-Loy and sung by Shankar Mahadevan himself (Who was introduced in this post), so though I could never even compare to that kindof amazingness, here is my own humble attempt.

The tempo did start a little slow, but I personally thing the song still turned out great. Stephen and Nick provided some amazingly soulful music, which really fit well with the song.

A couple of years ago, I recorded this song along with a Karaoke I found online and sent it to my mom for mothers day. She was so happy!
