Kaisi Paheli Zindagani & A Kiss to Build A Dream On

Standard

When the song Kaisi Paheli Zindagani came out, there was a buzz that it was a copy of the song “A Kiss to Build a Dream on” by Louis Armstrong. I personally love both songs and saw their similarities as a great opportunity to put these together :) Thank you to my sister Sneha for the videography!

Translation (By Hindilyrics.net)
None of this is new; no, this is all old talk
of what a riddle, what a riddle life is!

Who ever managed to stop its eternal flow?

Drink it slowly; it’s a powerful intoxicant!
He who has drunk of it knows laughter even in grief.

It’s a story that makes you laugh and cry in the space of an instant.
What a riddle, what a riddle this life is!

A strange dream in your eyes;
your tear has made a pearl.

Like sun blocked by a shield, how lovely and restful is this shadow!
What a riddle, what a riddle this life is!

A Kiss to Build A Dream On
Original Singer: Louis Armstrong

Lyrics
Give me a kiss to build a dream on
And my imagination will thrive upon that kiss
Sweetheart, I ask no more than this
A kiss to build a dream on

Give me a kiss before you leave me
And my imagination will feed my hungry heart
Leave me one thing before we part
A kiss to build a dream on

Watch me Prove!

Standard

Back in the Christmas of 2008, one of my closest friends spent the Christmas Holidays with our family for the first time. As a fellow “Mathie”, we started our holidays by making Math “bling” out of Aluminum Foil. She was Sigma, and I was Pi. We also composed our first song- “Prove”. We picked the song, and added lyrics to the first half. I worked a bit on the second half after the holidays, and helped pick out the proofs for the Chorus, but “Sigma” took it to the next level! She finished up the song, recorded it, and made an AMAZING video out of it! Needless to say, my sister ignored us for the entire holidays, even though we did make her “Integral” bling that she never wore. I guess we were too cool for her.

Sigma is definitely the most dedicated person I have ever met, and when she takes on a project, whether it be school, work, crafts, or .. well.. completely random, she puts in 100% effort. And it has paid off! This Video is awesomely hilarious, but it is not Sigma’s greatest accomplishment. She is a fantastic mathematician, works at an actuarial firm, studies, and continues to take on many creative projects in her spare time. She is also my “partner in crime” when it comes to Jewelry Making

Saawariya Ki Rang Raachi

Standard

I did a quick acapella of a song I learnt from my music teacher. Saawariya Ki Rang Raachi is a Carnatic Bhajan in Raagam Janasamodhini.

It was a one shot recording, and I know it’s not perfect, but the song is a very beautiful one, so I do hope you enjoy it.

It is my first of hopefully many more video recordings.
My eyes do some weird things in this video, so for that I apologize.

Singing with Shankar Mahadevan- IIFA 2011

Standard

If you are visiting my blog after a while, make sure you read the prelude to this post. It will give you a little bit of a background.

The last time I left you, there were no videos posted of the entire music workshop, and definitely nothing of me singing with Shankar Mahadevan. I did finally find a video for you :). (Edit: I originally had the RawalTV video here, along with my singing and the MC Siddharth Kannan mentioning it in an interview afterwards,  but unfortunately it no longer exists). My singing starts at approximately 1:01:30

It sounds like my voice was shaking along with my body :P It’s either nervousness, or the fact that I was singing at “C”, which is quite a few notches higher than my regular “G#”.

[Edit 03/11/2012]

The above clip is a shortened version of the entire IIFA Workshop, with just my part. The sound is terrible, as it got sped up, but if you don’t feel like searching through the entire video, this will give you a glimpse. It has been over 8 months since this experience and thinking about it still gets me excited. How I wish I could go to India and get the opportunity to really sing with such stalwarts.

Kaisi Paheli Zindagani Live

Standard

Last year, I did my first ever live Hindi performance for the 2009 Diwali Dinner (The second live performance was “Iktara“).

I sang Kaisi Paheli Zindagani from the Movie Parineeta.

I would like to thank my friend Nik, who fake-played the sax for the sax solo! It was a huge crowd pleaser :)

Lyrics

nayi nayi nahi yeh baaten
yeh baatein hai purani
kaisi paheli hai yeh
kaisi paheli zindagaani
Thama haroka isko kisne
ha yeh toh behta paani
kaisi paheli hai yeh
kaisi paheli zindagaani
la la la la
la la la la
zu zu zu zu
zu zu zu zu zu
pee le isse ismein nashaa
jisne piya woh gam mein bhi hasa
pal mein hasaye aur pal mein rulaye yeh kahani
kaisi paheli hai yeh kaisi paheli zindagaani
thama ha roka isko kisne
ha yeh toh behta paani
kaisi paheli hai yeh
kaisi paheli zindagaani

la la la la
la la la la
zu zu zu zu
zu zu zu zu zu
aankhon mein gar sapana naya
aansu tera ik moti hai bana
duuri sajan se jaise duri
yeh shaam ho suhaani
kaisi paheli hai yeh kaisi paheli zindagaani
thama ha roka isko kisne
ha yeh toh behta paani
kaisi paheli hai yeh
kaisi paheli zindagaani
uu baby
nayi nayi nahi yeh baaten
yeh baaten hai purani
kaisi paheli hai yeh
kaisi paheli zindagaani

Note: I was up for singing immediately after we ate a full Brar Buffet. My voice quality was still recovering from all the food :P
